Q: How can I access the relevant policies of the university?

Q: What is the attendance policy? How does attendance affect my grade?
A: Students who do not attend 1/3 of the lectures in core and freshman courses shall not receive F automatically. However, instructors have the right to mandate such a regulation in any course if they include a statement with similar effect in their syllabi. (revised according to the University Academic Council dated September 25, 2009; effective starting in Fall 2009)
Q: How are credits transferred from other undergraduate institutions?
A: When a student applies for transfer, courses taken are closely examined. Syllabi of the courses taken must be provided so that they can be compared with the requirements of Koç University. If the content of the course and the grade received match with the requirements, the student’s credit is transferred. The transfer credit is the credit of the corresponding course in Koç University. (Example: If a student has taken a 4 credit course, but the corresponding course in Koç University is 3 credits, only 3 credits are transferred. The reverse is also true). It is by regulation that transfer credits can not exceed half of the credits required for an undergraduate degree. (Article 10)
Q. Can I be exempt from taking certain courses?
A. Students who want to be exempt from a course have to apply to the Dean’s office of their college. Exemption is possible by assigning AP to a particular course upon the recommendation of the Executive Council of the college concerned. Students do not earn any credits towards their degree requirements.
Q: How many area and free electives can I choose?
A: This depends on your program and the numbers for different programs are given in the course templates in the catalog.
Q: How can I add or drop courses?
A: The deadlines for adding a course and withdrawal from a course are announced in the academic calendar. All adds and drops must be approved by the advisor.
Q: How can I carry on my GPA calculation?
A: GPA may be considered as the weighted average of courses taken. The grade obtained from that course (e.g. A=4.00 , F=0.00) is multiplied by the credit of the course, which is available in the template or in the Catalog. This is the calculation of the point for that course. GPA is the sum of points divided by the total number of credits taken. When students repeat courses, the second grade received is used in place of the previous grade for the GPA calculations.
Q: How do courses taken in summer semester affect GPA and total credits?
A: All credits taken in summer semester are treated as regular courses and affect GPAs the same way other courses do. Since the load of credits taken in summer semester are below the normal load students take during the Fall and Spring Terms, students do not receive Honors for the SPAs that are above 3.00.
Q: When I repeat a course how do the previous and new grades enter into the GPA calculation?
A. The previous grades received from a repeated course are not included in the GPA of the related term in which the course is repeated. SPA and GPA of the previous term are not changed. (Article 18)
Q. What is Summer Term?
A. Depending on the need and interest of the students a selected number of courses are offered in the Summer Term. These courses are usually electives including language courses and some of the core courses. The Summer Term is especially useful for those students who are irregular due to the English training program or having transferred. Students who start in the Spring Term may have difficulty in the Fall Term since some of the common core and compulsory area courses have prerequisites. The courses attended in the Summer Term can remedy this situation and irregular students may graduate on time. The Summer Term is also useful for those double-major students who need to take additional courses or those students who can take their previously failed courses when offered in summers.
Q: What are the necessary conditions to apply for a leave of absence?
A: General practice has shown that students take term leaves due to medical reasons or plans for studying abroad. (Article 8)
