Program Overview

Koç University is one of the best places to obtain a MA or Ph. D. degree in economics. The Economics faculty at Koç University has a solid reputation as contributors to the frontiers of knowledge in Türkiye and abroad.

Recently, the department has been ranked number 1 in Türkiye and continues to improve its ranking in Europe and the world. Students are supported by research and teaching assistantships. They will have the opportunity to participate in the research projects of faculty members and teach their own classes so that they can develop their teaching skills further.

Admission Requirements

Statement of Purpose

Required for all applicants. It should not exceed 2,000 words focusing on the following questions: 

Why do you apply to Koç University?

Why do you apply to the particular program?

What are your career objectives?

For applicants of PhD programs what are your research interests and who do you want to work with?

Transcripts 

You must have a 3.00 GPA for application for MA Applications. 

We strongly encourage applicants to submit a scanned image of the transcript at the time of application, which can speed processing; however, a final, official transcript will be required of all admitted students during registration. Applicants who have attended international institutions must submit transcripts or certified attestations of study, with certified English translations. Once translated, the original transcript and the certified translations are to be sent to the Graduate School admission office.

  • Letters of Recommendation 

The Graduate School requires two letters of recommendation for MA applications. These should be by persons well qualified to speak from first-hand knowledge about the applicant’s potential for graduate study. Letters of recommendation must be submitted online.

  • GRE/ALES 

Applicants to MA programs must have their results from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE-for foreign applicants) or ALES (Akademik Lisansüstü Eğitim Sınavı-for native applicants)General Test sent to the Graduate School. You need to also upload available scores during online application. You will be able to leave these spaces empty if your scores are not available at the time of application. We do accept applications without ALES and/or TOEFL scores. You must submit these scores as soon as they are announced.

  • TOEFL/YDS/YÖKDİL

All native applicants and international applicants whose native language is not English must ensure that the Graduate School receives their official score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Occupational Profiles and Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the Master’s Degree Program in Economics have the opportunity to work in many domestic and international academic positions, both in the private sector and in the public sector if they provide the necessary competencies. They can work in many fields such as expertise, auditor, foreign trade, marketing, management, economic management. Marketing and finance departments are suitable places for graduates of economics.

It is not possible for a student enrolled in the MS without Thesis program to directly transfer to the relevant PhD program at the Graduate School. However, the student can be evaluated for admission to the relevant PhD program to assess if they meet the conditions specified for application to the PhD program. Some of the students who graduated from this program also apply to doctoral programs.

Program Overview

MA in Economics Non-Thesis Program is a one-year program consisting of 10 courses (30 credits) and a Project. Project Course is non-credit and evaluated as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. Students need to register for the Project Course in the Spring Term.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are expected to be graduated from an undergraduate program. Students, who are still studying and are expected to graduate before the Fall Term, can also apply.

Application Requirements:

•    Transcript: A minimum GPA of 3,00/4,00
•    English Proficiency: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): IBT 80, CBT 213, PBT 550 or YDS 87
•    ALES Minimum: 90
•    GRE (Graduate Record Examination (For International Applicants): Minimum Quantitative160
•    2 letters of reccommendation
•    Application Form

After application, all applications are evaluated by the committee and ranked within their ALES/GRE scores, recommendation letters etc. If needed, interviews are held by the committee.
