Introduction to the language that gave rise to the Western literary tradition of epic and lyric poetry, rhetoric, drama and comedy, historiography, philosophical discourse and the novel. Student will acqire basic knowledge and skills in grammar, syntax and vocabulary. By the end of the first semester they will be able to read simple texts in the original language. The goal of LANG 511 is to prepare to read more complicated texts and to begin to inspect epigraphy.

Topics include the emergence and development of the cuneiform writing system, the decipherment of the Hittite cuneiform writing, Hittite Language and its decipherment, the sign repertory of the Hittite cuneiform, exercises in cuneiform; writing and reading, phonetic peculiarities of the Hittite language, nominal structure of Hittite; inflection, substantives and adjectives, categories of pronouns, verbal structure of Hittite; conjugation, voices and tenses.

Introduction to the basic grammar of the Latin language. Pronunciation systems. The active and passive verb systems. Indicative and subjunctive moods. Nouns of all five declensions. Adjectives and adverbs. Participles. Basic constructions, including direct and indirect speech. Concentration on building basic prose reading vocabulary. Students to read simplified prose texts based on Petronius and Apuleius to increase fluency and to build background cultural knowledge.
