This course covers theoretical approaches and methods used in the design and implementation of archaeological field research and data analysis. It focuses on the principles that archaeologists use to explain human cultural development from the material record of the past. Questions considered will include: What is archaeology and what are its aims? Is there a coherent body of archaeological theory to which most archaeologists subscribe? What appears to be the most productive theoretical approaches for understanding and interpreting the past?

Archaeological method and theory with emphasis on the principles and practice of Anatolian archaeology. Topics include: survey and excavation methods and associated recording techniques, the instrumental analysis and interpretation of various kinds of excavated materials, and the presentation and publication of archaeological results.

The course examines perceptions and representations of the Late Antique and Byzantine worlds in modern times. Approaches and transformations in the study of the discipline will be analyzed. Modern methods in history writing form an integral part of the course.

Students present their research and MA thesis proposals. Learn about research methods, publication ethics and improve their writing planning. Graduate students participate in the seminars given by Archaeology and History of Art program faculty and visiting fellows at the Center for Anatolian Civilizations

Ottoman modernism and the historical and cultural transformation in the 18th and 19th centuries will be discussed in view of the artistic developments. How Western modality penetrated into the cultural sphere and how borrowings led to the birth of new techniques, forms and styles in the art and architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries leading to the early Republican Period will be the main theme in the course including a critical discourse of the concepts of 'modernism' and 'westernization' and 'national identity'

A selection of literary texts, films, visual representations, and/or essays that speak to a particular social issue or set of interrelated social issues. Focusing on the ways of perception of the Other in socio-cultural, political, religious, geographic, ethnic, gendered, or racial terms in different cultures or time periods. Exploring human identity in relation to the Otherness of the monstrous, the animal, and the super-, sub-, or extra-human.

Exploring war as a shared historical, social and psychological experience as recorded, represented or expressed in literature (poetry, novels, plays, memoirs), art (sculpture, painting, drawing), architecture (monuments, memorials) and other cultural media (photography, film, journalism) from prehistory to the present.

An exploration of the aesthetic concepts of the 20th century musical composition and dance choreography, the arts of creating/organizing sounds and movements. Possible relationships-both diverging and converging-between these two disciplines when brought together on stage in traditional or contemporary inter-disciplinary artistic forms such as dance-musical, music-drama, opera, digital multi-media performance. Considering parallel developments in other artistic fields such as painting, sculpture and cinema. Testing and challenging the boundaries between sound and movement, as well as those investigating the tripartite relation between sound, movement and image. Critical discussions on Aesthetics, Modernity&Postmodernity, High&Low Art, Orientalism&Self-Orientalism, the nature of art and creativity, autonomy of artistic disciplines as well as blurring of boundaries.

Are film genres a marketing tool, a by-product of journalism or a fundamental way of understanding and discussing motion pictures? Is there such a thing as a `genre film? or is no movie immune to genre criticism? What are the generic tropes associated with certain genres? Can a film belong to more than one genre? Does a film?s genre stay the same over time? Does a genre-based view expand or delimit our conception of a motion picture?
