Profile of The Programme

Koç University Mathematics Department despite its relatively recent foundation became one of the main research centers in mathematics in Turkey. The department has 15 research mathematicians and an ever-increasing number of Ph.D. students. Thanks to its small size, there is a close interaction between faculty members, graduate students and undergraduate students. This is exhibited in the many topics and independent study courses offered to the undergraduate and graduate students by the faculty and the weekly tea hours and seminars where faculty interact with students creating a community that is inspiring for everyone involved.

Graduation Requirements

Students need to have a GPA at or above 2.00/4.00 and need to have completed all courses on their curriculum with a passing letter grade in order to graduate.

Occupational Profiles and Access to Further Studies

Our graduate students can pursue a Ph.D. study in pure or applied mathematics, or a somewhat related field such as computer science, economics, or industrial engineering. If the student would like to enter the public or private sector immediately after graduation, we note that our program is diverse and well-balanced enough to give them an edge in the constantly changing demands of the work life.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

1 Master deductive reasoning and inference rules of logic.
2 Learn the role of implications.
3 Learn how to judge correctly whether a proposed chain of reasoning is valid or not.
4 Understand the structure and dynamics of mathematics such as axioms, definitions, theorems, proofs.
5 Understand the role of abstraction and generalization in mathematics.
6 Learn how to formulate real world problems in terms of mathematical terminology.
7 Learn how to develop appropriate notation and discuss heuristics whenever necessary.
8 Learn how to formulate problems geometrically if possible.
9 Learn the fundamental proof strategies in mathematics, such as proof by contrapositive, proof by contradicition.
