The aims of this course are to introduce the cultural and social issues which are significant in the making of modern Türkiye. The course will cover the period from the early nineteenth century with specific emphasis on the cultural and social transformations in major moments and turning points. To give an overview of the history of Türkiye, the first weeks of the lecture will cover the leading issues in the history of the Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic. Then, the course will proceed with selected topics that are important in understanding the Turkish society.

Multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases: Mechanisms of diseases, pathologic findings, clinical presentations, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging and treatment. Topics include, esophageal diseases, gastritis, peptic ulcer, malabsorption, infectious enterocolitis, inflammatory bowel disease, tumors of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon, jaundice, viral hepatitis, steatohepatitis, metabolic liver diseases, diseases of gall bladder and biliary tract, tumors of liver and biliary tract, pancreatitis and tumors of pancreas.

Texts to include the Patria of Constantinople of Hesychius Illustrius and selections from the Ephesiaka of Xenophon of Ephesus, both illustrating aspects of history, mythology and social life. Concentration on building fluency and vocabulary acquisition. Attention to be paid to the morphology of the verb. Special focus on introducing problems of textual transmission, basic translation skills and the techniques of commentary.

An introduction to important topics in biostatistical concepts and reasoning. Tools for describing central tendency and variability in data; methods for performing inference on population means and proportions via sample data; statistical hypothesis testing and its application to group comparisons. Several statistical methods such as linear regression, ANOVA, logistic regression, survival analysis, nonparametric methods, ROC analysis that are commonly used to study biological problems. In-lab practices on computers and software for statistical analysis, to provide students with the skills to generate, read and interpret the results in their fields of study.
