ISTANBUL, 1453-1922-This thematic seminar examines significant moments in the architectural and urban history of the Ottoman imperial capital from the moment it was conquered until the empire’s demise. It emphasizes a cross-disciplinary approach to the study of the built environment in which material, social and political cultures are explored in tandem. Topics discussed include issues of patronage, concepts of monumentality, court and city relations, meanings and uses of public spaces, cultural legacies and relations with Persia, India and Europe. The course will involve first-hand experience of the city through visits to specific sites and monuments.
